Gygel Contraceptive Jelly contains the active ingredient nonoxinol-9, which is a chemical that kills sperm. Nonoxinol-9 is not effective enough at preventing pregnancy to be used on its own as the only method of contraception, except perhaps in women whose fertility is low, such as women over aged 50 or women who are breastfeeding. The jelly should be used in combination with barrier methods of contraception such as condoms, diaphragms or caps to provide additional protection against the risk of becoming pregnant.The jelly is most appropriate for using with a diaphragm. You spread the gel over the diaphragm surface and also around the rim, allowing it to come into contact with the cervix. After having sex it is important to keep the diaphragm and spermicidal jelly in place and untouched for at least six to eight hours. If you want to have sex again within this time, an additional application of Gygel must be made first. A vaginal applicator should be used to insert more Gygel. |
